Getting Here and Getting Around

Grise Fiord has no connecting roads, and therefore our connection to the ‘outside world’ is solely by air. We have a small airstrip, and our runway is considered be one of the more challenging to navigate, given its proximity to nearby ‘mountains’.

Our Airport Terminal is a great Welcome to Grise Fiord. It is administered by the Hamlet under Contract with Nunavut Arctic Airports. Our Airport Maintainer is Raymond Mercredi.

Local travel entials the use of all-terrain vehicles in the summer (and potentially into the winter season) and snowmobiles in the winter. In winter travel is primarily within the community, however in the summer season there is an access road (under development) that reaches out into the tundra (please refer to Projects and Initiatives featured elsewhere on this website). Also at that time of year, small boats are used for hunting and fishing.

We have an annual sealift of supplies and fuel, with these ships arriving in September. Its arrival is an exciting time for community residents – it’s nice to know that the fuel has arrived to provide heat throughout the many cold months that lie ahead!
