Land Access Road

The development of an access road across the tundra (the “Greenlander”) to the West of town, is an ongoing project. Progress is gradual, but the initiative is one that will be of great benefit to the community, and to visitors to Grise Fiord.

The road is an opportunity to “get outta of town”, relax on the tundra, have a picnic, and view local “fauna and flora”!

Part of the road has been completed, and we are approximately 2 kilometers away from arriving at the steep approach back down to the ocean. However, in 2025 we commissioned a study by Worley Canada to look at options for, and the safety of, scaling the steep decline down to the water once we reach that point. They recommended this not be attempted; not even the development of a narrow roadway for ATV’s or snowmobiles. As such, we will terminate the road at a parking lot/picnic area overlooking the ocean.

And in 2026, given access to excess quarry material being taken off the site under development for the Water Treatment Plant, we are proceeding with development of the Road to Nuvuk, to the west of the community, at least for the current season (rather than continuing development of the Greenlander this season).
