New Water Treatment Plant
The Government of Canada, and Nunavut, are working together on planning for the design and construction of a new Water Treatment Plant in Grise Fiord.
Our community currently relies on a glacier for our drinking water, and with the impact of global warming, there is concern regarding the long-term supply of our drinking water. We have no natural water reservoir like other Nunavut communities.
The project will include three water storage tanks. One of these will be fully redundant, for maintenance purposes. The tanks will feature freeze protection, mixers, alarms, and bolted steel construction. Water will be treated to meet the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality.
Safe and clean drinking water for all communities in the territory is a stated, top priority for the Government of Nunavut.
The existing facility will remain operational for 1-2 years as this project is underway. Following that the GN will look at options for abandonment and restoration.
