Small Craft Harbour

Grise Fiord is subject to harsh marine conditions after the breakup of the ice in early summer, and this situation seems to be getting worse as a result of global warning.

Examples of damage include community roads that have been destroyed by waves, the main bridge (that joins both sides of the community) being blocked, shacks that are close to shore being destroyed, and the loss of valuable hunting gear.

A break water/small craft harbour will help protect the community’s shores, and may even serve as a catalyst for the community members to develop their own business in the fishing industry.

The community recently was required to reach a consensus on the location of the future Small Craft Harbour, so that initial work can proceed. They had two options to consider and reached consensus on Option #1, shown below
