Housing Additions
Igluliuqatigiingniq, or “Building Houses Together,” generally referred to as Nunavut 3000, is a strategy that aims to increase Nunavut’s housing supply by 3,000 units by 2030.
To support this initiative, the Government of Canada introduced the Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) in the 2022 budget to facilitate an accelerated supply of housing and ‘enhance certainty in the approvals and building process.’
The housing target for Grise Fiord is one 6-plex, and 2 single/modular units.
The Hamlet of Grise Fiord has signed the Contribution Agreement with CMHC for the receipt of $459,000 in funding under the HAF Program. This funding is not for housing construction, which will be funded by CMHC directly to companies like NCC Developments. Rather, these funds are to ensure community planning and infrastructure additions/improvements are done to prepare lots for new development and servicing.
This project will take place over 3 years. Grise Fiord will probably not see its incremental new housing target met (as noted above) until 2026.
