Renovation for a Daycare

The community has been without a Daycare Facility for a number of years, and of course this has a very real, negative impact on our community; specifically on families with infants, and other pre-schoolers.

Our last daycare went out of operation more than five years ago because the building was condemned by both the Fire Marshall's Office and Department of Health. The closure has adversely affected parents, children, employers and the community, as noted above.

Both the GN’s Department of Education and Kakivak Association are very much involved in an initiative which is expected to see our Old Hamlet Offices (where the Community Radio Station is currently located) renovated as the community’s daycare.

Education is supporting this with actual funding commitments, and Kakivak with additional expertise, guidance, and support. It is an important initiative.

With 2024/25 funding having been finalized with the Department of Education, Concentric Engineering will work to finalize a floorplan for the facility that is in compliance with all necessary regulations and codes. Concentric will generate Issue for Permit (IFP) and Issue for Construction (IFC) documents, hopefully leading into the arrival of construction materials on the 2025 sealift, and the completion of the renovation as soon as possible thereafter.
