Health Centre

Grise Fiord has a well-equipped Health Centre which meets basic healthcare needs. Staff are very friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere is very relaxing.

While some publications indicate a construct date of 1987, local feedback indicates at least 6 years later than that.

One registered nurse is almost always present at the Centre, but usually two. A doctor may be in town at certain times, as well as a dentist and/or a denturist.

During regular hours you may reach the Health Centre at 980-9923. And after hours at 980-4032.

Of course visitors to Grise Fiord from other provinces/territories in Canada should bring the applicable Health Card card for their jurisdiction.

Grocery Store

The Grise Fiord Co-op is the community’s grocery store, providing a wide selection of Fresh, packaged and frozen foods, as well as a selection of supplies for fishing, hunting, sewing, and other hardware supplies.

The post office is housed within the Co-op.

Hours are 11 am – Noon, and 1 pm to 5 pm Monday through Thursday. On Friday the store is open until 6 pm, and on Saturday from 2 pm to 4 pm. It is closed on Sundays.

RCMP

The Dominium Government started RCMP posts in the Arctic in the 1920’s. The original Craig Harbour detachment, established by seven officers and one Inuit couple from Pond Inlet was transferred to its current site at Grise Fiord in 1956.

Today, the detachment is staffed by two constables.

With very little crime in Grise Fiord, the RCMP officers are able to commit extra time to much-appreciated community presentations and updates, including visits with our local school students, and attendance at local events. The Hamlet and the detachment work very closely together, with Council receiving updates on a regular basis.

Protective Services

Our fire department has a dedicated fire truck, and is staffed on a volunteer basis.

We have a heated Fire Hall that houses the fire truck, ensuring that we are able to respond quickly and efficiently to any fire emergency.
