Nunavut 3000 – Building Houses Together
Submitted by: David General (SAO)
The goal of Nunavut 3000 is to build 3000 homes in Nunavut by 2030. It is a collective strategy being implemented by governments, local housing organizations, Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, the three Regional Inuit organizations, and the private sector.
According to Nunatsiaq News (February 12, 2024) NCC Development, an Inuit-owned corporation based in Iqaluit, is slated to build 2.000 of the planned 3,000 homes. Contracts signed with NCC to date include a $105 million contract to build 150 units in 8 communities, and more recently, a $135 million contract to build an additional 166 units units in 17 communities.
Therefore all 25 of the communities in Nunavut will receive housing units. Clarence Synard, NCC President & CEO is quoted as saying that the first 150 units will be completed by mid-2024.
While the article states that Grise Fiord will receive 6 units, information received more recently indicates that our community will also receive 2 additional (single, modular) units.
The Hamlet of Grise Fiord is being funded under the federal Housing Accelerator Fund to help ensure that community planning is completed in preparation for these units. How this money will be spent is currently under consideration.
